Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Dentistry – the path to saving your own tooth

Restorative dentistry is the foundation of modern dental care. Its goal is to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible, minimize invasive procedures and prevent tooth loss. At our dental clinics in Prague, we strive to consider not only functionality but also aesthetics and the long-term durability of the tooth with every treatment.

What does restorative dentistry include?

Treatment of dental caries (cavities)

Cavities are the most common cause of hard tooth tissue loss. Our doctors work with modern methods and technologies to remove only the infected part during cavity treatment, preserving the healthy core of the tooth.

Fillings and reconstructions

We use only high-quality dental materials – mainly composite tooth-colored fillings, ensuring long-term functionality.

Endodontic treatment (root canal treatment)

If the cavity affects the dental pulp, so-called endodontics – root canal treatment – is necessary. It involves removing the infected nerve, thoroughly cleaning and filling the canals to prevent re-infection.

We are a team you can rely on

Our team of doctors consists of experienced professionals with many years of practice. We follow the latest trends, use state-of-the-art dental technology and continuously educate ourselves. Treatment with us is a combination of expertise, a human approach and quality dental care.

Indications and Contraindications for Conservative Dental Treatment

Conservative dentistry focuses on the treatment and restoration of teeth damaged by decay, trauma or wear, with the goal of preserving the tooth, restoring full functionality and achieving optimal aesthetics. Below you will find an overview of situations where this type of treatment is appropriate, and when alternative procedures or postponement of treatment should be considered.

    Indications (When is Treatment Appropriate?)

    1. Tooth Decay (Various Extents)

From incipient cavities (which can be addressed with minimally invasive techniques) to deep caries that have not yet affected the dental pulp.

    2. Damaged or Lost Fillings

Replacing old, damaged, or leaky fillings that could lead to further decay.

    3. Broken or Chipped Teeth

Small to medium-sized fractures or chips in teeth that can be reconstructed with composite fillings.

    4. Pulpitis (Inflammation of the Dental Pulp) or Pulp Necrosis (Pulp Death)

A condition requiring root canal treatment (endodontic therapy) to save the tooth from extraction.

    5. Abfraction, Erosion, Abrasion

Damage to the cervical areas or surface of teeth caused by overload, acids, or abrasion.

    6. Aesthetic Corrections

Minor adjustments to tooth shape, closing of diastemas (gaps between teeth) using composite fillings to improve the aesthetics of the smile.

    7. Preparation for Prosthetic Treatment

Treatment of cavities or root canals prior to the fabrication of crowns, bridges, or other restorations.

    Contraindications (When Caution is Advised?)

    1. Extensive Tooth Damage

If the tooth is so severely destroyed by decay, fracture or weakened that it cannot be reliably restored with a filling and requires a crown, extraction, or other prosthetic replacement.

    2. Acute, Uncontrolled Inflammation or Abscess

Severe acute inflammation in the mouth or an abscess that requires initial treatment (e.g., antibiotics, drainage) before definitive conservative treatment can be performed.

    3. Extremely Poor Oral Hygiene

If the patient has consistently neglected oral hygiene, professional dental cleaning is essential first, along with improved habits to ensure long-term stability and success of conservative treatment.

    4. Uncontrolled Systemic Diseases

Highly unstable condition in serious chronic diseases (e.g., uncontrolled diabetes, severe heart conditions, recent myocardial infarction) – requires consultation with the attending physician and possible premedication.

    5. Allergies to Materials Used

Known allergy to components of composite resins, local anesthetics or other materials used during treatment.

    6. Severe Dental Phobia/Anxiety

In cases of extreme anxiety, a special approach may be necessary (e.g., analgesia sedation) which may not always be available for routine conservative treatments, or needs to be planned in advance.

    7. Poor Tooth Prognosis

If the tooth is so damaged (e.g., advanced periodontitis with high mobility, vertical root fracture) that its rescue would be impractical or unsuccessful.

Important Note: This list is for guidance only. Each case is individual and requires careful evaluation by a dentist. It is always crucial to inform your dentist of your complete medical history and current health status so they can choose the safest and most effective treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Dental Practice

On this page of our dental practice website, we have prepared answers to the most frequently asked questions from our patients. If you cannot find what you are looking for here, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Is it better to extract a tooth or save it?

We always strive to save the tooth because no replacement is as functional as a natural tooth. Extraction is only considered as a last resort.

    Does root canal treatment hurt?

Thanks to modern anesthesia and technologies, treatment is now painless and often faster than before.

How long does endodontic treatment take?

The duration depends on the complexity of the root canal system. Usually 1-2 visits, each lasting 30-90 minutes.

Do you still use amalgam fillings?

Amalgam contains mercury and its use is now significantly limited due to potential health and environmental risks. At our clinic, we prefer modern composite fillings which are safe, aesthetic and fully functional. We recommend amalgam only in specific cases and after a thorough consultation with the doctor.
